In their words

“Very frustrated with the new ads system. I've been using this app for over a year and loved it. Suddenly I'm getting ads every time I open the app. The ads are loud, disruptive and so frustrating, makes me want to throw my phone. I am considering finding another app. I notice that several people are commenting about this and the responses claim it's a bug that they figured out, yet I'm still getting the ads... :(”

“I was very impressed my this app at first. The layout is good and practical and the database is nicely fleshed out. I started to get a bit unhappy when I found that barcode scanning was behind the paywall, which is unusual for this sort of app from my experience. Over time such annoyances have added up. I had a lot more to say but hit the limit. Put more succinctly, it's a great app that's dragged down badly by its choices in regard to monetization. Still usable, but irritating.”

“The ads are too much, this app was great before they started this obnoxious and unrelenting ad placement. I've used it for a year or so and I never saw any ads. I get it you have to turn some sort of profit and if you can't get enough subs then you have to do ads. Do you really need a full screen interruption of what I'm doing literally every 3 min?!?! This needs to be fixed you give the impression your trying to annoy your users into a paid sub which is a sure fire way to lose users.”

“I've been using WHOOP for over four years. I love the data and information it provides. But if you have tattoos, the device won't work or at least won't work well. Be aware of that. The Maim Reason for such a low rating is the absolute decline of customer service. They lean too heavily on AI and make it a pain to submit any help request. It takes on average 2-3 days for a response. If it keeps up, I will be terminating my subscription.”

Measured, not built

Payer pressure 0.11 clears the gate, but the complaint pattern is diffuse price resentment rather than an unsolved workflow a small team could out-execute. Recorded rather than pursued.

What this study cannot tell you

  • About 41% of substantive reviews are not matched by the taxonomy, so every percentage here is a floor, not a true rate. The miss rate is roughly uniform across niches, so comparisons between them still hold.
  • App-store reviews over-represent the daily user. Buyers complain on G2, Capterra and in churn calls, and those sources are not represented.
  • No recency weighting: a complaint from 2021 counts the same as one from last week, so some cited failures may already be fixed.
  • Coverage is uneven between stores; where an app is iOS-only in practice its share is computed from Apple data alone.
