In their words
“2 days in, and they're only pushing drinking water, which I already do, just not in the evenings. Other apps are included in the free trial but you have to download them all. Ugh. Why not combine them all? App burnout is real. No way to customize font, so if you have dyslexia this probably won't work for you since they use a seriffed font. Also cannot customize content once you've set your goals there's no way to skip ahead if you're bored or need to fine tune your goals.”

“sleepcasts crash. total UI fail into complexity. they can't even get the stress management course right, it just loops on the intro video, the course doesn't get added to your main view so you have to go hunt for it again. and there's no way to see subsequent content in the course. I've watched headspace go from useful 5-7ish years ago to rock bottom cash grab today. spend your hard earned money with a company that appreciates it, not this one. fire your UI director, wrong direction.”

“Good app., does what it professes to do. However, it is very, VERY hard to cancel. I have to believe that the app was designed to intentionally be this difficult to cancel. The level of difficulty bordered on criminal. If the app was as difficult to use as it is to cancel, nobody would ever use it. (By the time I was done successfully canceling it, I was about as uncalm as I've been at any point in the last year.)”

“Be careful when accepting "offers". The ad said 50% off for mental health awareness month and the option was to start the 7 day free trail only which would have allowed canceling with a 2 day advance reminder. Not only did I not get any 2 day notice (yes, I confirmed all email folders and found other marketing materials but none others), but when the payment was charged, I was billed full price. I feel pretty scammed.”

Payer pressure 0.19 clears the gate, but the complaint pattern is diffuse price resentment rather than an unsolved workflow a small team could out-execute. Recorded rather than pursued.
What this study cannot tell you
- About 41% of substantive reviews are not matched by the taxonomy, so every percentage here is a floor, not a true rate. The miss rate is roughly uniform across niches, so comparisons between them still hold.
- App-store reviews over-represent the daily user. Buyers complain on G2, Capterra and in churn calls, and those sources are not represented.
- No recency weighting: a complaint from 2021 counts the same as one from last week, so some cited failures may already be fixed.
- Coverage is uneven between stores; where an app is iOS-only in practice its share is computed from Apple data alone.
