In their words

“This app USED TO BE very good....however, ever since the forced upgrade to the newer version of the app, it SUCKS. constant crashes, failure of the app screen to refresh, forcing me to have to kill the app & restart MANY MULTIPLE times a day. i really wish developers would stop focusing on trying to make things look "pretty", and focus more on making sure the product actually WORKS.”

“App is pink/purple now, with the latest update (on mobile and desktop) without the option to change theme/set colors. If you don't offer the option to change theme, at least don't make it pink/purple. That's very opinionated! Just have Light/Dark modes (white, black, shades of gray)”

“This new app is a train wreck. The whole reason I use toggl is for it's simplicity in time tracking. The ux is now so convoluted that I spend 2 or 3 times the amount of time I used to spend to get the same tracking. Big clear buttons are replaced by small ones that are tough to hit, critical screens like adjusting hours are difficult to find now. Do a UXD study immediately, and fire whoever did your new UXD. Bring real users in with diverse use cases. Or just roll back... EDIT: Appreciate the offer to accept some additional info via email!”

“I feel like updates to the timer have progressively made it more complicated to perform simple functions. more popup screens = more clicks required = clunkier and less efficient software (ironic, huh?) I understand trying to improve aesthetics of the details within the app: buttons, menus, etc, but please don't make aesthetic changes that compromise basic functionality! I still use the app, but the browser version on my laptop is my go-to because it's easier to use... Wasn't always like that!”

Not an opportunity — the complainers do not pay

Payer pressure is 0.02. The reviewers are staff, drivers, tenants or parents using software their employer or landlord bought. Their complaints are real and commercially inert: they cannot switch, cannot cancel and cannot be sold to. See the payer gate.

What this study cannot tell you

  • About 41% of substantive reviews are not matched by the taxonomy, so every percentage here is a floor, not a true rate. The miss rate is roughly uniform across niches, so comparisons between them still hold.
  • App-store reviews over-represent the daily user. Buyers complain on G2, Capterra and in churn calls, and those sources are not represented.
  • No recency weighting: a complaint from 2021 counts the same as one from last week, so some cited failures may already be fixed.
  • Coverage is uneven between stores; where an app is iOS-only in practice its share is computed from Apple data alone.
